Single vs. Double Swing Gates

How opening width, leaf weight, and daily traffic help you choose one large swing panel or two matching leaves.

Swing gates open on hinges. The big design choice is whether one large leaf or two matching panels best serve the driveway. Both can look modern or ornamental - the decision is mostly about width, weight, and how you use the entrance.

When a single leaf works well

Narrower openings often use one leaf for a clean, continuous look. Fewer meeting points can mean simpler hardware. The tradeoff is a heavier panel and a wider swing arc on one side of the driveway.

When double leaves make sense

Wider openings usually favor two leaves so each panel is lighter and easier to operate - especially if you automate later. Center meeting hardware and balanced design keep the entrance looking intentional from the street.

Automation and matching details

  • Confirm post strength and hinge hardware for the leaf weight you choose.
  • Plan clearance for landscaping, grade, and parked cars.
  • Coordinate pedestrian gates and fencing so patterns and finishes match.

We custom-build both configurations for Southern California properties. Share your opening width and style goals - we will recommend single or double before fabrication starts.
