Railings

What Is the Difference Between a Guardrail and a Handrail?

Guardrails protect elevated edges; handrails give you something to grip on stairs and ramps. Many projects need both.

People often say "railing" for everything along a stair or balcony. For design and safety, it helps to separate two jobs: stopping a fall at an edge, and giving you a comfortable grip while you move.

Guardrails

A guardrail is a protective barrier along an elevated edge - balconies, landings, and open sides of stairs. Height and opening size matter so the barrier does its job while still matching your architecture.

Handrails

A handrail is the graspable surface you hold on stairs and ramps. Shape, continuity, and mounting height affect comfort and usability for everyday traffic.

When you need both

Open staircases often need a guardrail along the drop side plus a handrail for grip. Indoor and outdoor systems can share a visual language while meeting different exposure and attachment needs.

If you are remodeling a stair or balcony, we can help you specify the right combination - modern or ornamental - and fabricate it to your measurements.
